Shortage of skilled workers in the United States
Did you know that only 6% of students consider a career in the trades?
An Alarming Shortage
In 2014, ManpowerGroup spoke to over 37,000 employers in 42 countries. The survey asked about the difficulty finding good talent to fill their jobs.
The top 3 jobs worldwide that employers have difficulty filling are:
- Skilled Trades Workers
- Engineers
- Technicians
36% of all employers have reported difficulties filling jobs and 54% of those employers experience a medium-to-high impact on their ability to meet the needs of clients.
Is college right for everyone?
66% of high school students enroll in higher education, but only 35% of future jobs will require a 4-year degree.
Meanwhile, here’s what will be happening to jobs in the trade industry.
- 20% job growth in the PHCE industry is expected in the next 10 years
- Many people in the trades right now are getting ready to retire. 58 is the average age of electricians in Boston.
- There will be a 60% turnover in trades employees over the next 10 years—not because there’s a problem with these jobs. It’s because they’re such good jobs that the people in them now have held on to them until retirement age.
