Through partnership with Ferguson, the “Explore The Trades Skills Lab, Built by Ferguson” initiative provides equipment grants to create or refurbish plumbing or HVAC training spaces in schools to bring the trades back into the classroom.

Since 2021, 35 schools in 17 states have been recipients of equipment grants, impacting over 3,500 students by having the plumbing and HVAC trades as part of their middle or high school education.

Powered by Industry Partnerships

The success of the Skills Lab program is made possible through strong partnerships with industry leaders.

Ferguson, our founding partner, is a North American Fortune 500 company and leading distributor of
HVAC and plumbing products. Their continued support has helped expand the program nationwide, bringing essential tools and equipment to classrooms.

SkillCat joined the program in 2024 to provide digital training support. Their online, accredited platform
offers certifications like EPA 608 and OSHA-10, helping students build real-world skills. So far, students
have completed 1,352 SkillCat courses, logging over 4,151 hours of training—and counting.

“This course has done wonders for the perception of the trades among students. This program continues to attract students from all walks of life, allowing them to gain appreciation for the trades and the opportunities that exist after high school. Students become familiar with a multitude of tools that they otherwise would have no exposure to. The hands-on experience equips them with practical skills that are invaluable in today’s job market. It also fosters a sense of achievement and confidence as students complete tangible projects that reflect their learning and effort.”

Trades Education In Action

In a standout moment this year, Explore The Trades hosted a compelling panel discussion featuring Mayfair School
(Philadelphia, PA) skilled trades educator Evin Jarrett and Jamiah Washington, a former Mayfair student, who shared their personal experiences in the skilled trades. Their stories brought trades education to life and emphasized the importance of community advocacy.

Moderated by Executive Director Kate Cinnamo and Trustee Lauren Martin of Seaside Plumbing Inc., the conversation was rich with insight, inspiration, and real-world perspective.

With over 500 attendees, the event sparked renewed energy and commitment to raising awareness of the trades —
driven by the voices of those making a difference.

Because of this initiative, enrollment has increased as has students’ ability to do things they couldn’t do before, including building trainers and servicing equipment.”
