Three Ways You Can Support the Next Generation of Skilled Workers

The struggle to attract young people to the skilled trades has been well-documented. We need to work together to ensure we have the people needed to offer these crucial services. Few industries offer the career stability and progression that the trades can provide. Additionally, skilled workers can choose to work for a company or lean into their entrepreneurial spirit and start their own business. Unfortunately, there is an uphill battle to bring young people to the trades. There are many misconceptions about the work and compensation within the trades that must be undone in order to bring in the next batch of plumbers, electricians, and HVAC technicians. Here are three ways you can help.

Support Trade Education

One of the best ways to support the next generation of workers in the skilled trades is to support trade education in your community, which can happen in a variety of ways. Donations to a local high school or trade school are a great start, but you may be able to offer more than just monetary or in-kind support or equipment and tools. If you are a decision maker within your organization, you can implement ride-along-style programs that give those considering trade school a firsthand look at what life will be like after they graduate. By positioning these programs so that they are available to recent high school graduates, you can provide the experience that leads to them continuing their education in the trades.

Create a Mentorship Program

By implementing a mentorship program available to local high school or trade school students and recent graduates, you are able to create a pipeline of young skilled workers to your organization. As with any industry, it can be difficult starting out in the trades. There is a need for experienced workers, leaving some companies hesitant to bring on unproven tradespeople. By extending a hand-out to those looking to start, not only are you able to staff up but you also build loyalty with your workforce and contribute the economic health of your community.

Promote Diversity and Inclusion

There are large swaths of the population that are underrepresented within the trades – particularly women. Create programs within your organization that encourage those who are underrepresented to join. No matter their background, there are thousands of people who are hungry for an opportunity to prove themselves. Often, these people don’t even consider the trades due to the stigma that they may not be welcome. Roll out the welcome mat, show them they have a place in our industry, and watch your diverse workforce flourish.
