What is an Apprenticeship & Why Should I Do it?

Apprenticeships are a time-tested employee training system that combines job-related technical instruction with structured on-the-job learning experiences.

The benefits of going through an apprenticeship are many! Apprentices gain skills and in-depth industry knowledge through paid on-the-job training that puts them ahead of the crowd in their pursuit to a great career.

Most states require aspiring skilled PHCE technicians complete formal education through a trade or technical college. In some instances, students may complete their apprenticeship during school as part of their training. Other times, a license may be obtained in school, then followed by an apprenticeship.

How Do I Get Started With an Apprenticeship?

While every state (and sometimes regions within specific states) has it’s own requirements, one approach that we’ve found to work quite well is to get connected with a local contractor in your area and ask if you could help over the summer – offering assistance around the shop to clean, stock, etc.

Perhaps you’ll have the opportunity to run parts to a customer’s home to a tech while he/she is on the job. Speaking with the owner or general manager about their business can provide you insight as to what this career path is like. Taking this first step into the skilled trades can lead to a valuable apprenticeship in the future.

Apprenticeship vs. Internship. What’s the Difference?

Internships and apprenticeships both give you hands on training, but that’s where the similarities end.

While completing an internship is almost expected for any college graduate seeking employment, an apprenticeship (almost) guarantees you a high paying job once you successfully complete it. Apprenticeships are geared toward skilled jobs. Internships, however, are available for most college students and often are generalized.

When it comes to an internship, most people either do it for a semester or summer and then move on to the next one or get hired full-time. With an apprenticeship, it can take years to complete and requires a full-time commitment and is boosted by more classroom learning. Because of the commitment required with an apprenticeship, that leads to greater pay and more hands-on training than an internship.
