Founded in 2005, Explore The Trades is committed to developing the next generation of a skilled workforce by changing the perception of the trades. The Nexstar Legacy Foundation provides a channel for people in the home service industry to give back to their community. Businesses in the plumbing, HVACR (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration) and electrical industries provided funding to start the foundation in 2005. The foundation launched a scholarship program attract talent to these industries. We raise funds with events and other activities.

What We Do

Explore The Trades provides resources about careers in the trades of plumbing, heating, cooling, and electrical trades to educators, students, and parents across the country.

Our purpose is to create and build a foundational understanding of these trades for so many. Through classroom posters, trade-specific infographics, and videos, the organization is setting the stage for those who choose to enter the trades after high school.

Together with trades professionals, industry experts, and educators, Explore The Trades is bringing the trades back into the classroom.

About Explore The Trades

Founded in 2005, Explore The Trades is dedicated to bridging the technical talent gap in the service trades of plumbing, heating, cooling, and electrical.

Explore The Trades, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is part of the national conversation to bring the skilled trades back into schools. Through specially designed classroom resources and an equipment program for K-12 schools, Explore The Trades promotes the awareness and importance of skilled trades careers. Explore The Trades is also an industry resource for residential service contractors and industry partners looking to partner with schools in their communities.

Explore The Trades is a 501 (c)(3) registered nonprofit and is governed by a Board of Trustees. The organization is a  “sister organization” of Nexstar Network, member-owned organization devoted to providing leadership and business coaching and training to residential service companies across the U.S., Canada, and beyond since 1992.

Job Summary:

This newly-created position will seek to connect education and industry in the spirit of fulfilling Explore The Trades’ mission of bridging the technical talent gap to the service trades of plumbing, heating, cooling, and electrical. 

Utilizing the organization’s database of over 2,000 school districts in the U.S., the position will be the main point of contact for schools and industry representatives (home service companies, manufacturers, distributors, suppliers) looking to connect in the spirit of trades awareness and education. Leveraging relationships in both education and industry, the position will help establish and nurture partnerships that are mutually beneficial for educators seeking trades awareness opportunities for their students and industry vendors and contractors seeking to create talent pipelines in their local communities.

Under direction of the Executive Director, the position will: 

  • Design, implement, and manage an online system that encourages service companies and K-12 school districts to work together for skilled trades awareness and education.
  • Track and measure success and growth of connections program (number of education/industry connections, number of students impacted by program, number of students securing apprenticeships/jobs because of program, hiring success for service company).
  • Coordinate the planning and implementation of partnerships with industry partners, K-12 educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and school district staff.
  • Explore labor market needs and conducts feedback sessions from leaders.
  • Build out Skills Lab peer group connections.
  • Familiarizes self with credentialling and certification opportunities for high school students in the interest of career-based learning opportunities for students.
  • Help plan and coordinate activities (if applicable) that build strong educational/industry partnerships like: roundtable discussions, career fairs, vendor fairs, student field trips., etc.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of how schools are structured from a K-12 perspective, partnership programs and career readiness pathways which enhance foundational learning opportunities for students. Experience in a school district setting and/or CTE knowledge preferred.
  • Understanding of apprenticeship processes.
  • Knowledge of workforce development programs. Experience creating and growing industry/education partnerships preferred.
  • Must be articulate and demonstrate excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing. 
  • Must be highly organized with attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize work and effectively follow through on tasks in a timely manner. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build and grow relationships with community organizations and business partners. 
  • Must demonstrate great interpersonal skills along with ability to use time effectively especially when working with business partners. 
  • Energetic and self-driven with a high level of integrity. 
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately. 
  • Ability to be flexible while working in a fast-paced work environment with a commitment to get the job done. 
  • Must be responsible, reliable and dependable. 
  • Experience with Microsoft applications/SharePoint and Donor Perfect (preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to present articulately and succinctly to different audiences. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a variety of stakeholders required.

  • 15-20% 


Physical Requirements:

  • Must  be able to sit at a desk and stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.


Salary Range: 

  • $44,300-68,300
