Master License – What Is It?

Trade careers are rewarding and full of opportunities for growth and development. One of those opportunities is to earn your master license. With commitment and dedication to becoming an expert, plumbing, HVAC and electrical journeymen can advance to the master level.

Are you cut out for your master license? Let’s find out.

What is a Master License?

A master license is the highest level of licensure or certification that a skilled tradesperson can obtain. It signals advanced knowledge, skills and experience in a particular trade.

While master licenses aren’t required for tradespeople, they signify a dedicated work ethic and open the doors to better pay and career opportunities.

What Kind of Training Does a Master License Require?

In most skilled trades – after you have spent three to six years as a journeyman – you can work toward your master license. This requires more classroom training and a test to earn your certification. The test will confirm your mastery of the trade, including your problem-solving skills and how you approach safety issues.

As you begin your journey to obtaining a master’s license, remember that not all states have the same requirements to earn the licensure. Be sure to check with your state’s trade board for more information.

What is Expected of a Master Tradesperson?

Much like a promotion from general to regional manager, a master tradesperson has greater responsibility than a journeyman.

Master tradespeople are often responsible for designing blueprints and systems, acquiring permits, training both journeymen and apprentices, maintaining equipment and supervising installations and repairs. Working at the master level is an additional responsibility, but rewarding.

Qualities of a Master Tradesperson

Similar to a journeyman, becoming a master tradesperson takes time and dedication. In addition to your licensing and certifications, master tradespeople have a notable set of qualities that distinguish them as the best in their field.

Master tradespeople have extensive, up-to-date technical knowledge and are always eager to grow their skills or adapt to industry trends. Understanding and utilizing the latest trade materials and techniques are an opportunity for advancement.

They also have superb problem-solving skills that have been honed over their years as a journeyman. Master tradespeople also have strong leadership and management abilities, excel at communicating and possess an unwavering commitment to safety.
